Michael Armitage at The Gallery, No.1 Royal Crescent

A work by Michael Armitage will be included in the inaugural exhibition at The Gallery, No.1 Royal Crescent. Titled ‘Being There’, the group show features work by 18 contemporary artists alongside four recently acquired portraits by Thomas Gainsborough. The participating artists have been selected by guest curator Ingrid Swenson MBE.

The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the experiences of artists and their sitters during the creation of a portrait, exploring the similarities and differences between the role of the artist in Gainsborough’s time and today. Armitage’s Untitled (2017) will be exhibited alongside works by artists including Frank Auerbach, Claudette Johnson, David Hockney and Chantal Joffe.
