Miroslaw Balka at the House of Art, České Budějovice

Posted:

30 November – 31 December 2017

Miroslaw Balka’s first solo show in the Czech Republic takes place at the House of Art České Budějovice.

‘Der Nachthauseweg’, titled after a short story by Franz Kafka, displays sculpture, drawings and video by the Polish artist, as well as a series of large A5 drawings made between 2007 and 2017. Balka’s work deals with both personal and collective memories and often consists of simple, everyday objects which are powerfully resonant of ritual and hidden memories.

The exhibition features the sculpture 229 x 118 x 75, which was recently shown in ‘Ein Auge, Offen’, Balka’s solo exhibition at Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin. Made of terrazzo slabs derived from his family home in Otwock, Poland, the structure is based on the measurements of the artist’s body and is elevated from the ground by a steel frame.
