30 September 2021 – 23 January 2022
Barbican Centre, London
In September 2021, the Barbican Art Gallery will stage the first European touring retrospective of works by Isamu Noguchi. Drawing from The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in New York, as well as private and public collections, the exhibition brings together over 150 works to retrace the evolution of Noguchi’s kaleidoscopic career, which spanned over six decades.
Featuring sculpture, theatre set designs, architectural and playground models, as well as his best-known lighting and furniture designs, the exhibition exemplifies the artist’s inventiveness and risk-taking approach to sculpture as a living environment. Rarely exhibited archive materials and photographs offer illuminating insights into the life of Noguchi, highlighting the humanist values of this visionary artist.
The artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery opens at White Cube Bermondsey in January 2021.
