Rachel Kneebone’s first exhibition in Scandinavia at Gösta Serlachius Museum

Posted:

14 May - 9 October 2022

Rachel Kneebone will exhibit new and existing work in a major solo exhibition at Gösta Serlachius Museum, Mänttä, Finland. Titled 'Punoutua' (which translates from the Finnish 'intertwine'), the presentation surveys Kneebone's practice to date, from her monumental works on plinths and classical capitals, to her more recent works, such as Rib (2019) and Shell (2020), where the plinth is removed and the sculptural language pushed to near dissolution.

Following the success of Kneebone's recent exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2021, 'Punoutua' shows the many sides from which the artist has approached porcelain, pushing the material outside its long historical use and maximising its organic nature. By poising a tension between form and fracture, the artist conjures states of movement and metamorphosis, transformation and suspension, whereby the sheer excess of layered elements across multiple tiles or 'tableaux' simultaneously creates narrative breakdown and visual dissolve.

A monograph on Kneebone will accompany the exhibition.
