Theaster Gates at Prada Rong Zhai

Prada Rong Zhai, Shanghai presents ‘China Cabinet’, an exhibition project by Theaster Gates with the support of Fondazione Prada from 11 March 2021. Conceived as a three-part narrative, the exhibition unfolds across the rooms of the building's first floor and focuses on the artist’s continued exploration of the medium of ceramics. In the first part, Gates presents works that highlight his ongoing interest in the reuse of materials, in craft and spirituality, traditional African American imagery, symbols from the civil rights movement and archival material such as magazines and books as well as music. In phase two, he investigates the formal and tactile aspects of ceramics through a site specific installation that is a reconstruction of a potter’s workshop, and in the final part, Gates recreates a domestic environment in which to present a group of individual artworks.
