29 January – 15 April 2018

Robert Irwin: Site Determined’ is the first exhibition to explore four decades of the artist’s outdoor environmental projects through his drawings and architectural models.

California State University, Long Beach holds Irwin’s recently refurbished Window Wall (1975), which was his first site-responsive public sculpture. The piece marked a significant change in his artistic practice as it was in 1975 that Irwin made the crucial step outside, engaging directly with the outdoor world. It is the starting point for the exhibition which explores the widening scope of his projects that engage directly with the outdoors. Other works include drawings of his Central Garden at the J. Paul Getty Center (1998) and his project in Marfa, Texas (2016).
