Robert Irwin at Kraftwerk, Berlin

Posted:

5 December 2021 – 30 January 2022

Light and Space opens at Kraftwerk Berlin from 5 December, a newly commissioned, site-specific installation by Robert Irwin. Driven by the exploration of human perception and the conditions of an environment, Irwin's art, for over 5 decades, has focused on the experimentation of light and space.

A new iteration of his signature 'Light and Space' installation, Light and Space (Kraftwerk Berlin) features hundreds of fluorescent light tubes arranged in an abstract, rhythmic pattern and is the largest of its kind in Europe.

For the first time, Irwin has integrated blue-coloured fluorescent tubes into the work, positioned on either side of a monumental 16 x 16 metre free-standing wall. Reflective of his innate ability to transform space - in this case, the brutalist architecture of Kraftwerk - the installation combines Irwin's interest in Abstraction's potential for an expansive, object-free space – alluding to his painterly experiments of the 1960s – with his more recent examinations of colour perception.
