Theaster Gates and Rebuild Foundation at the Stony Island Arts Bank

Rebuild Foundation will host a one-time-only durational performance by Theaster Gates, the Black Monks and friends, at the Stony Island Arts Bank.

For ‘A Clay Sermon’, a twelve-hour experimental performance, Gates transports his clay studio to the atrium of the Arts Bank, transforming the space into an active ceramics workshop, demonstrating the craft and performance of ceramic production through a series of improvisational sonic responses and sermonic vignettes.

Building upon a years-long body of work, which took the form of a film and exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery in London, Gates makes visible through craft, labour, land and ritual, the spiritual, material and epistemological significance of clay.

All proceeds from this performance will benefit Rebuild Foundation’s programming and forthcoming project at the former St. Laurence Elementary School.
