Theaster Gates has been named one of the 2025 Guggenheim Fellows. Established in 1925 by US Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife, Olga, the fellowship celebrates its 100th class this year. Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious honours in the arts and academia, the Guggenheim Fellowship recognises exceptional individuals across four categories: creative arts, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Gates is among 32 visual artists selected for the 2025 cohort, alongside notable names including Farah Al Qasimi and Lucas Blalock.
