Theaster Gates graces the cover of T Magazine (The New York Times Style Magazine) as part of their 2024 Greats issue. In the accompanying cover story, journalist Siddhartha Mitter offers a comprehensive look at Gates’s practice. Spanning several critically important aspects of the artist’s work, the feature chronicles visits to Chicago, the Black Artists Retreat (BAR) at LUMA Arles in France, and the Mori Art Museum in Japan, where the artist’s solo exhibition is currently on display.

T Magazine’s annual Greats issue celebrates four talents across art, music and fashion. This year’s Greats are Theaster Gates, Jonathan Anderson, Lorna Simpson and Florence Welch.
