Theaster Gates’s work is the subject of a major survey exhibition at New York’s New Museum, featuring tar paintings, sculptures, video, performances, and archival collections. Conceived as a response to mourning and loss,‘Young Lords and Their Traces’ continues the artist’s exploration of objects and the memories, personal significance and intimate histories they carry. From the formalism of his large-scale tar paintings to his experimental clay vessels and immersive installations, Gates explores how collective forms of knowledge and remembrance are built across the material world.

Through this presentation, Gates extends his artistic investments in the sacred and honours the great thinkers and makers who have shaped his practice and his world, elevating the cultural leaders who have passed on while keeping their names and their contributions alive.
