Virginia Overton's new permanent installation is unveiled at LaGuardia airport

A new site-specific work by Virginia Overton has been unveiled at the new Delta terminal of New York’s LaGuardia airport, her first permanent public commission. Entitled Skylight Gems (2022), the installation can be seen from every floor of the terminal’s atrium and uses the architecture of the skylight to emulate the process of flight, from ‘being on the ground to up in the air’. Influenced by her father's experience of flying into LaGuardia, Overton recreates the visual memory of the vantage point by assembling found skylights and suspending them from the ceiling, encouraging visitors to look up.

Skylight Gems was commissioned by Queens Museum, Delta Airlines, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and New York State.
