White Cube at Frieze Los Angeles

Posted:

15 – 17 February 2019

Booth B14

For the inaugural Frieze Los Angeles, White Cube will present a range of works by British artists including Tracey Emin, Christian Marclay and Eddie Peake, alongside Al Held, Theaster Gates, David Altmejd, Mona Hatoum, Jac Leirner and more at booth B14.

Highlights from the booth include two major paintings by the late hard-edge abstract painter Al Held. Measuring over 1.5 x 1.5m (5 x 5 ft) respectively, the 1989 work Centauri I features the richly coloured shapes and highly experimental use of perspective seen in the artist’s later works, while Inversion XVII, from 1978, utilises a range of straight and curved marks in a lavish monochrome composition.

Coinciding with Tracey Emin’s solo show in London - her biggest White Cube exhibition to date (running 6 February - 7 April 2019) - the gallery will present a suite of watercolors by the artist, alongside the bronze sculpture Too far for me to touch (2017), a contemplative piece featuring a small bird perched on top of a 1.9m (6.5ft) high pole.

A trio of works by Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum, who was recently awarded the Hiroshima Art Prize, draw on everyday life and the unstable world in which we live. In the striking Still Life (metal cabinet) (2015), a highlight on the booth, coloured glass is hand-blown into the distinctive shapes of hand grenades, and housed in an industrial metal cabinet, while Stool I (2015) and Korb III (2014) combine melted orbs of bright red glass with domestic objects.
