For ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, White Cube is pleased to announce a solo presentation of works on paper by Antony Gormley. While internationally recognised as a sculptor, Gormley’s artistic journey has always involved drawing in many different forms, using organic substances such as casein, crude oil, blood, coffee, chicory, earth, shellac and varnish.
As the artist states:
‘For me, drawing is a form of thinking. But it is also about the medium: using the intrinsic qualities of substances and liquids, a kind of oracular process that requires tuning in to the behaviour of substances as much as to the behaviour of the unconscious, like reading images in tea leaves, trying to make a map of a path of feeling, a trajectory of thought.
It is important to me that the substances I use to draw with are not taken for granted; casein, crude oil, blood, coffee, chicory, earth, shellac and varnish all come with their own qualities, extracted from the body of the earth, from the body of plants or from living bodies.
Drawings have immediacy. In a good session, drawing can be like going for a rugged, physical adventure on a blustery day with changing conditions of light and rain. A day passed without drawing is a day lost.’
Concurrent to ART021, White Cube will also present a curated selection of work at West Bund, with various artists including Damien Hirst, Imi Knoebel, Julie Mehretu and Liu Wei.

白立方荣幸参与ART021上海廿一当代艺术博览会，展出艺术家安东尼·葛姆雷的纸上作品。作为国际知名的雕塑家，安东尼·葛姆雷的艺术旅程也始终融合了众多不同形式的绘画，以酪蛋白、原油、血液、咖啡、菊苣、泥土、虫胶清漆等有机物质作为创作材料。
如同艺术家所言：
“对我来说，绘画是一种思考方式，但同时它也与媒介相关，即对物质和液体固有特性的使用。这是一种神谕的过程，它要求我们如同理解无意识的行为那样理解物质的行为，比如阅读茶叶里的图像，试图绘制一张感受之径的地图，一道思想的轨迹。
于我而言，重要的是我用以绘画的物质并非想当然的选择：酪蛋白、原油、血液、咖啡、菊苣、泥土、虫胶清漆，提取自土地、植物和活体，都有其各自特性。
绘画具有即时性。在一段时间内，绘画就像是在一个风雨交加、狂风大作之日，开启一次崎岖的身体探险。一日不作画，则浪费了一天的光阴。”
在ART021举行同期，白立方也将于西岸艺术与设计博览会上呈现一系列精选佳作，其中包括艺术家达明安·赫斯特、伊米·诺贝尔、朱莉·梅雷图以及刘韡等。
