Michael Armitage - Dream and Refuge

This seven-colour lithograph shows a woman asleep, wrapped in a printed cloth, and was created with displaced people in mind. Rather than presenting the woman as an object of pity, however, Michael Armitage shows her as an individual with a rich interior world, represented by the imagery crowding the outside of the picture space.

This dreamscape includes falling figures and the star found on the prow of a sailing bow that bestows good luck on those who travel. In the print of the woman’s wrap we find the repeating motif of a hornbill, referring to a creation myth associated with motherhood, loss and creation.

Dream and Refuge (2020) was created at The Curwen Studio in London and is built up through seven separate coloured impressions.

All proceeds from the sale of this edition of 250, will be donated to the non-profit organisation Gasworks/Triangle Network to benefit The Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), a non-profit visual art space dedicated to the growth and preservation of contemporary art in East Africa. The funds raised will go towards supporting NCAI’s programme and artist hardship fund.
