This limited edition work relates directly to the opening of ‘Gilbert & George: Major Exhibition’ at Tate Modern, London in 2007. With their familiar form of wit and self-deprecating humour, Gilbert & George here make use of the Evening Standard advertising placard. This motif formed the basis of their series ‘The Bomb Pictures’, which were exhibited for the first time at their Tate retrospective.

Since meeting at Central Saint Martins in 1967, Gilbert & George have embarked on a visionary journey, informed by what they observe in the streets and the people that surround their home in the East End of London.

In 2011 they continued their fascination with newspaper headlines with ‘The London Pictures’, where the artists sifted through thousands of daily posters taken from Liverpool Street station, to classify them by subject. Together they comprise a directory of quotidian urban behaviour, an unflinching audit of modern Western society’s relationship to itself, stripped of rhetoric or intellectual disguise.

For Gilbert & George, editions and posters form an important part of each exhibition. Through their accessibility, these works allow for a new kind of exhibition, spread throughout the world in people’s houses. They are another way to achieve their heartfelt endeavour ‘Art of all’.
