Pixie is a bronze multiple by Los Angeles-based artist David Altmejd. Born of British folklore, the pixie is a childlike creature fond of dancing and making mischief. Rendered in a golden bronze, this pixie, with its ragged garments lifted to reveal delicate limbs, seems to have been caught up in a breeze. Often depicted in fiction and folklore as malignant spirits, they are known to bestow favour or, equally, punishment, depending on their treatment by humans.

David Altmejd’s Pixie is a co-production between White Cube and Case Studyo, a specialist studio that collaborates with artists to produce unique, limited-edition objects. Released in advance of the opening of Altmejd’s solo exhibition at White Cube New York (14 March – 19 April, 2025), this ‘life-size’ bronze has been created as a companion to three larger sculptures of nymphs. Available in a limited edition of 15, the work was produced using the traditional and highly-skilled technique of lost wax casting.
‘Pixie is a spirit whose presence has been helpful in the studio, especially while I was working on a large-scale, chaotic sculpture. It carries a reassuring, energetic, and feminine presence. I was drawn to the pixie as a subject because it allowed me to sculpt a body on a very small scale - essentially a one-to-one scale, which, strangely, I had never done before. She accompanies the three life-sized bronze nymph figures - I like to think of her as a small-scale nymph.’

In March 2025, David Altmejd (b.1974, Montréal, Canada) will present a new series of sculptures at White Cube New York.
Altmejd’s work is a unique and heady mix of science and magic, science fiction and gothic romanticism: a post-apocalyptic vision which is at the same time essentially optimistic, containing as it always does the potential for regeneration, evolution and invention.
