This inkjet print by Jeff Wall is part of a series of works that portray the arranged displays and obscure contents of various shop windows. The composition of Shop Window, Brussels No.2 (2009) sees a figure from behind perusing the display of a jewellery store. The captured motion blur of the figure, combined with the image’s overexposed detail delivers a sense of loose spontaneity and quick opportunism that typifies the snapshot. Despite the photograph’s sense of immediacy and candidness, its contextualisation within Wall’s broader practice unsettles any affiliation to the genre of documentary.

As a vitrine-like structure that projects into space, the window display itself performs the difference between presentation and speculation, between heightened visibility and deliberate hiddenness. Wall’s attention to these modes of display and public looking, with their prevalence of reflections, fabrications and inscrutabilities, encourages the viewer to consider how visibility is organised and the role of photography in complicating its apprehension. Gazing fleetingly through a shop window, Wall suggests in Shop Window, Brussels No.2, is neither a naïve perception nor a simple kind of seeing.
