This print by Cerith Wyn Evans depicts two men on horseback in contrasting shades of black and luminous green ink. The image originates from a comic strip titled The Return of the Durutti Column, which featured French dialogue (translated into English by Evans for this edition) added to a French anarchist student poster. While the comic was originally created by the avant-garde group known as the Situationists, the title ‘Durrutti Column’ itself refers to a military unit of nearly 6,000 anarchists, led by the Spanish revolutionary José Buenaventura Durruti.

By screen-printing in an ink that reveals the image’s outline solely in the dark, the complex history of this source material is delicately reflected in the work’s optics. The edition engages notions of reproduction, from the intertextuality of the source material to the adaptation and conversion inherent to the medium of screen-printing. Carrying the viewer through numerous citations and conjuring multiple political and cultural contexts, Evans’s work invokes various histories.
