Louise Giovanelli’s lithograph print, Tide (2024), depicts a closely cropped view of highly glossed, wavy hair. The work belongs to a series of paintings by Giovanelli which feature tight frames of wigs, continuing the artist’s interest in light and its relationship to texture. In Tide, Giovanelli’s narrow composition focuses on the high shine of lightly curled hair, indicating the human figure obliquely. Here, light both accentuates and complicates its subject, allowing a knowingly figural detail to become metaphysical.

Attesting to the artist’s continued engagement with the sacred and profane, Tide invites a slowed process of looking in which the tensions between representation and materiality assume uncanny qualities.
