Mona Hatoum’s lithograph Untitled (whisks) depicts four rotary whisks arranged in a choreographed upright formation. Disrupting associations with provision and domesticity, Hatoum estranges the familiar, transforming these everyday kitchen utensils into ghostly apparitions that seem to dance like a mechanical ballet.
Expanding on the artist’s early incorporation of kitchen utensils in her work, Untitled (whisks) exemplifies a key tenet of Hatoum’s sculptural practice: the appropriation of domestic objects to witty, often surreal effect. In the production of this work, the photographic image of the whisks was solarised and the background printed twice. The resultant deepening of the black creates a velvety effect, making the whisks appear as if they are emerging out of the black surface.
