‘Rooting the Synapse’ was published to accompany Antony Gormley’s second exhibition at White Cube Hong Kong, in 2018. Foregrounding a new development in the artist's practice, which moves beyond notions of verisimilitude, the exhibition presented the ‘Rooter’ series of iron sculptures, which apply plant-like branching systems to map a human body in space.

This is a small format book, with reproductions of each of the individual works as well as an accompanying group of works on paper. Alongside these illustrations are an essay by writer, anthropologist and film-maker Hugh Brody, and an in conversation between the artist and Catherine Lampert, art historian and curator and previously director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London.

Hugh Brody is a writer, anthropologist and film-maker. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, and is an Honorary Associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. He also is an Honorary Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kent. 

Catherine Lampert is an art historian and curator. She was senior curator at the Hayward Gallery and between 1988–2001 director of the Whitechapel Gallery, London.
