‘The NEW NORMAL PICTURES by Gilbert & George suggest that the old punk adage ‘the day the world turned Day-Glo’ has come to life. Everywhere is dark yet too bright, tonal contrasts go to war with one another. In streets, alleys and vistas, the unreal city seems to rearrange time and tenses, accelerating the slow and stalling the immediate. The overlooked and thrown away reacquires visibility and meaning. The usual hierarchies reverse; discard dominates.’ – Michael Bracewell

This book, designed by the artists themselves, was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name, at White Cube Mason’s Yard, London in the spring of 2021. Generously illustrated and with an essay by the novelist Michael Bracewell, the landscape format of the book accommodates for form of all of the works in the exhibition, which are accompanied by the artists’ own humorous and insightful captions for specific pictures.

For every exhibition that Gilbert & George stage, they publish a catalogue and often also a series of signed posters, in keeping with their deep held belief of ‘Art for all’.
