Published to mark Theaster Gates’ solo exhibition at Tate Liverpool (December 2019 –May 2020), this book shares the exhibition’s focus on the history of Malaga Island in Maine. Through a body of work that encompasses sculpture, installation, film, music and dance, Gates’ offers a portrait of this island off the coast of the northeasternmost state in the US, responding to the history of the island and its ethnically diverse population.

Carefully curated illustrations include film stills from Gates’ Dance of Malaga (2019), featuring the choreography of dancer Kyle Abraham, historical images of Malaga Island as well as generous reproductions of Gates’ sculptural work. Complementing this are equally richly diverse texts including long-form essays, an in-conversation between Gates, Grace Wales Bonner and Michael Ralph and the artist’s own writing.
