Our Sustainability Commitments

White Cube are committed to reducing our environmental impact and we are working towards a 50% reduction in our carbon footprint over the next 10 years.

Specifically, we aim to:

  • Reduce emissions from energy, travel and transport by 50% by 2030 against a 2019 baseline
  • Build environmental principles and action into gallery practice, from exhibitions to art fairs
  • Build environmental principles and action in gallery place and ways of working – from office to warehouse to gallery buildings – for those who work for and with us, exhibit with us and visit us

To support us in achieving our aims we will:

  • Monitor and develop understanding of our environmental impacts and performance and do an annual carbon footprint review
  • Engage with White Cube artists, clients, suppliers and visitors and within our sector to influence and be a part of positive environmental change
  • Engage our team internally on taking environmental action at work and at home by having monthly Green Team Meetings
  • Continue to be active member of the GCC (Gallery Climate Coalition)

White Cube and Julie's Bicycle

Julie’s Bicycle is a not-for-profit that supports the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability.

In 2020, White Cube engaged Julie’s Bicycle to help us understand our environmental impacts and carbon footprint, and to identify the best way to reduce them.

In light of their recommendations, White Cube has made changes both inside our galleries and in our working practices, and we will continue to do so in the years ahead.

Our environmental actions to date include:

  • Green electricity supply for our London galleries with a view to change our other galleries once a sustainable supply becomes available
  • Building in LED lighting in our London, New York, Paris & Seoul galleries
  • Research & implementation on sustainable packaging materials and solutions
  • All packing and building materials are timber Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified
  • Use of sustainable drinks suppliers and reusable serve ware for events catering in London and increased vegetarian and vegan options
  • Green talks for staff on different topics from energy and digital to travel and exhibitions
  • Setting up monthly meetings of the White Cube Green Team
  • Review of the impact of business travel and artwork shipment
  • 3 electric vehicles & one van that meets Euro 6 standards
  • 4 electric car chargers for our staff, artists and clients
  • Bicycle parking, shower facilities, and cycle to work schemes for staff
  • London Honey Company beehives installed at White Cube Bermondsey

White Cube and The London Honey Company

Since 2014, White Cube has collaborated with urban beekeeping pioneers The London Honey Company, whose bee hives are installed on the rooftops of London landmarks including White Cube Bermondsey, Tate and Fortnum and Mason.

The honey produced by the colony of native and industrious Buckfast Bees at White Cube Bermondsey is sold online and at stockists including Fortnum and Mason.

White Cube are Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) Active Members

White Cube has qualified as a 2023 Active Member for Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC). GCC is an international community of arts organisations working to reduce the art sector’s environmental impact.

White Cube is committed to GCC’s goal of reducing the sector’s CO2 emissions by at least 50% by 2030, as well as promoting zero waste. To achieve membership, White Cube demonstrated the implementation of environmental sustainability best practices in line with GCC’s guidelines.
